• I'm sure sonar is the main problem here, but I'm not convinced it's the sole reason. It would be interesting to know if there are historical accounts of whales beaching themselves before sonar and modern freight shipping came along.

  • I was given to understand that mass strandings were a feature of the topography of the particular beach: The shore slopes in such a way that the whale's sonar can't actually warn them that they are approaching the shore until it's too late.
