Will Boris get Brexit done?

  • BORIS JOHNSON has drafted in a crack team to draw up a new Withdrawal Agreement, consisting of two senior Brexiteers and vocal Tory backbencher Jacob Rees-Mogg.

Mr Johnson and Tory leadership rival Jeremy Hunt are both to bring in new negotiating teams to develop a new Brexit blueprint. Cheers erupted at the leadership hustings in Manchester last night after it was revealed that Olly Robbins had left his post as Brexit negotiator. Jeremy Hunt has acquired the talents of senior Canadian politicians, while Boris Johnson enlisted hardline British Brexiteers.

Mr Johnson’s three-man team consists of European Research Group chair Jacob Rees-Mogg, Brexit Secretary Stephen Barclay, and Attorney General Geoffrey Cox.

They began work on a new deal last week and will create proposals to leave the EU with or without a deal come the October 31 exit date.

Lots of Brexit related news over the last few days, but if anyone was wondering and doubting whether Boris was going to be serious or not about Brexit (like me), I think this news should alleviate the fears.

Boris is putting his team together which may also include Steve Baker who is the most hardline Brexiteer out of all the Conservative MPs and very knowledgeable on all things Europe. With Rees-Mogg on his team, I think we can be pretty confident Brexit will happen under Boris and Rees-Mogg and almost guaranteed if Baker joins the team too.

But the best news of the last 24 hours or so is about the man most responsible for trying to keep us in the EU, May's right hand man on all things Brexit, Olly Robbins.

After hearing Boris speak at one of the hustings about "clearing away the decks," Robbins decided quite rightly that if he doesn't jump now, he'll be pushed. Beyond May herself, this is the person most responsible for screwing up Brexit so far. Good riddance.^^

  • If you think about it, what does the Department for Transport actually do?

They don't run the railways, the train companies and Network Rail do that. What they do is set policy and you don't need a whole government department for that. In fact it could be argued that with all these think tanks out there, apart from a core group of specialists, why do we need a civil service at all? All that leads to is what we had with the cabal led by Olly Robbins.

  • On the one hand I am heartened by the claims from both candidates that we will actually leave the EU, deal or no deal. However, we've heard it all before and it was a complete work of fiction while the government worked (in secret) to do the very opposite.

I'm at the stage of not believing any politician, Brexiter or not! I am also very VERY angry at the lies and deceit of politicians and those of influence, eg. the CBI. If I had my way, they would all be kicked out, defunded, whatever it takes to make them honest and become pro-UK again.

    I can dream!

Mark Twain — 'Never argue with an idiot. They will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.'

  • Oily Robbins, the rabid EU loving REMAINER who did his best to keep us in the EU will get a job in the city , funny that , I thought it was finished after us morons voted to leave the cradle !

  • Certainly good news that Olly Robbins won't be there to sabotage the next PM's Brexit plans like he did the last. Hammond will also get booted off to the back benches. Another doom and gloom merchant out.

With Rees-Mogg on his team, I think we can be pretty confident Brexit will happen under Boris and Rees-Mogg and almost guaranteed if Baker joins the team too.

At least they'll be united in the one aim to get us out.

  • Hope so Heero. If Boris has some good minions under him, there's a good chance.

I won't go on about it, but I'm not a Boris fan and that will never change, but if he does deliver Brexit in October or shortly afterwards, then I will become a lot more positive about him at that point.

I hope Hammond gets booted, full stop, right out of parliament. The smirky c**t that he is. He went to a school not a million miles from where I live.

Perhaps he'll join the CBI, they'd make good bed fellows.;)

As that "great" statesmen Bush Jnr used to say, "trust, but verify."

When we're out of the EU, then I'll believe them.

I am not convinced he was the actual saboteur. He was maybe chosen purely because of his loyalty to the EU and was just followingorders. He couldn't appoint himself, could he?

    He deserves nothing less!

Obviously not single handed but there was/is a cabal in the cabinet that were/are busy trying to derail Brexit First thing Boris has to do is to disband that cabal.

Boris Johnson could be set to slash the Cabinet in half by scrapping whole government departments in a bid to save £8bn if he is elected Prime Minister.

The Tory leadership hopeful is reported to be considering a move to abolish or merge departments such as Justice, Transport and Work and Pensions.

    Perfect opportunity.

Also puts £8bn extra into the brexit dividend fund.

He was to all intents and purposes the real Brexit secretary as we know that he ran a parallel Brexit department to DD's one. Obviously, he was appointed by May, so it all comes back to her, unless you have someone else in mind??

Nope. You got it in one. :)

  • All this talk of them being a crack Brexit squad is just that, talk, until they have actually done somthing they are no better than the rest in that they are saying what people want to hear, the proof as they say is what actually happens so far they talk a good game lets reserve judgment until, they have actually started playing and Brexit is done and dusted, until then I have no faith in that anything will change and that they will achieve anything.

The real problem they face was aptly highlighted by Dominic Grieve , shit house in chief Tory MP on the Ian Dale show last night on LBC .

This louse seems to think a deal to please him is impossible as we will actually leave and he is so democratic that he will never support it .

    Oh, I agree Ron.

Boris is good at talking and making speeches and jokes etc, but can he actually deliver what he says. I guess by the 31st October, we'll know.

I was going to make a post about Grieve's latest shenanigans. I'll try and find the story and I agree, he is a total shit.

  • The EU parliament is voting?? ;( on the nominations for the top posts today , great democracy when you have one candidate that none of us can vote for!

Germany , France and Belgium to get the top jobs , NICE!

  • They seem to be in a bit of panic as the Brexiteers turn their backs on the beloved anthem :D

I think I saw somewhere they wanted to replace Junkers. No more free drinky winkies for you, old son. Catastrophe!

  • I'm getting sick of the public burbling on about Boris not having a grasp of the details. It's petty, small minded and completely misses the point, which is that a leader should on any given subject assess the big picture and propose a change in basic direction. It will be the executives in the cabinet who will debate the pros & cons of that proposal and, if they have the right leader - and if the leader has the right executives - they will more often than not buy into the proposed change, fine tune it and set in motion its implementation (with the help of an army of civil servants).

I've been re-reading Boris Johnson's book written 10 years ago called "Have I Got Opinions For You" and there is ample evidence in that book that he is extraordinarily clever, original and deep-thinking in so many ways. It would be a terrible sad reflection on the Britain psyche if Tory activists chose instead a dullard like Jeremy Hunt, quite apart from him increasingly resembling a Mark II version of Theresa May, mouthing banalities and trying to sell himself like soap powder.

As for BJ's personal life, so what? We should all be so lucky!
