David Davis rebuts Emmanuel Macron over Brexit 'open door' on eve of talks

When making a post, please ensure it complies with this site's Main Rules at all times.
  • David Davis has told EU leaders they should be in “no doubt” that Britain is heading for the exit door as formal Brexit talks finally begin.

In a statement issued before his Brussels trip tomorrow, the Brexit Secretary promised the “historic referendum result” will be “delivered” by Theresa May’s Government.

The comments are designed as a direct rebuttal to Emmanuel Macron, the French President who said this week the “door remains open” for Britain to stay in the EU.

A slap for Macron I'm pleased to say. We needed to make it very clear that we are not wavering.

  • Serve those smug EU gits right if UK leaving causes a mass exodus of member countries.

They need us more than we need them plenty of other countries in the world we can trade with.

I hope not, but who knows in this post election world.

    Macron, the opportunist.

    Aka Merkel's toyboy.:)

    Let's hope so Ron.

Absolutely. Once you get going and others see that it doesn't kill you, they will start thinking ...

That they want Brexit to fail for us to frighten all the others into thinking that leaving the EU would be disastrous for them.

  • There is still a significant problem however, in the shape of Hammond and his cronies.....May should have got rid of Hammond earlier, as has always been a Remainer - and even now is insisting that the UK will HAVE to remain in the Customs Union to avoid absolute economic devastation - as he forecasts.....totally ignoring the huge potential for world wide preferential trade agreements.

In fact, despite May's current 'weak' position.....she should still get rid of him......and any other Cabinet member who is not 100% Brexit.......

  • I saw bits of the political shows this morning, but I am going to rewatch them again in a minute. If Hammond said we are staying the customs union, that means we have to accept freedom of movement. Total disaster.

As for getting rid of people who are not 100% leavers, apart from David Davis, Andrea Leadsom and now Gove, weren't they all remainers in the cabinet?

  • There is still a significant problem however, in the shape of Hammond and his cronies.....

Hammond slid the knife in very gently when he said he wasn't happy about his part in the campaign on the Andrew Marr show.

Yes he did.........maybe he is now trying to make amends by agreeing that Brexit does indeed mean leaving the Customs Union.......

  • Watch the mighty Macron turn into the Micron as time and compliance with Merkel sink in their fangs. Macron is a yuppie out of time.

"Rise of the Macrons" Sounds like a really bad Sci-Fi "B" movie. As you say LW wait til Merkel gets her fangs in and starts feeding. You've seen what happens to a fly when a spider gets going.

  • In that article, it only quotes "unnamed sources" so who do we believe? What he said on tv himself, or what others have reported he supposedly said behind the scenes?

This is why it should've been leavers running things in government rather than remainers like Hammond, although I suppose Boris will get the top job soon... God help us all. But is he really a leaver?

  • How about this one then!

If you read up on the chappy, he was always a staunch advocate for remaining....and of course, coming out with the Remainer's usual predictions of absolute economic disaster if we left etc........but , first and foremost, he is a politician!!....Corbyn of course used to be an avid Eurosceptic at one time......but that wasn't appropriate for the Labour Party leader - albeit, they have, (naturally), decided to support the peoples referendum wish. In September 2015, Corbyn actually vowed to oppose Brexit...https://www.ft.com/content/d3ccd9…8b-50226830d644

And, you may recall that at one time, Labour were opposed to the idea of a referendum..........

  • I don't doubt Stevlin that Hammond's heart in not in leaving the EU, but at least publicly he said he wanted out of everything. I guess the question to ask is what his boss wants.

If May is saying to the public we're coming out of the customs union but instructing DD to keep us in, that's bad news.

We need details of what's going on in Brussels.

Couldn't agree more....but unfortunately, I suspect progress will only be drip fed....and, in view of the high degree of anti- Brexit feeling that clearly exists in the UK, including in the UK Parliament too, I don't think that the EU will be overly inclined to give us a 'good' deal...especially as they can ill afford to enable a high contributing member to 'escape', and still enjoy favourable trading term s with the EU......but that doesn't mean that we should accept anything that is on offer. I believe we would even be better off out of that unnecessary political union without a deal......and hopefully, the EU will see that too!!

  • We just don't know what will happen, do we? Will they go down the punishment route so as to give a warning to others not to leave the EU club, or be more reasonable?

Although it's only days into the negotiations, it's not looking too good for us at the moment. Only another 21 months of it to go.

There was a lecture on BBC Parliament the other day about Brexit given by a professor, it was quite interesting. I don't know if its available on iplayer or anything.

Although he was quite pro-EU, he did say it wouldn't be all doom and gloom if we were out of the EU without a decent deal. We could import American cars without the EU's external tariff placed on them, as one example he cited. And go back to trading with Australia and New Zealand on normal terms and import their food much cheaper than now without the EU's tariff placed on their goods.

He made an interesting observation, that many conservative MP's want Brexit, a hard Brexit because they want to go back to the Thatcherite liberal trade policies of open trade with everyone, rather than the closed shop, socialist politics of the EU.

He went onto to remark that such a liberal trade policy with the world could harm the very people who voted for Brexit and wanted more protectionist measures imposed. He reckons it will go the opposite way and we may end like Singapore if we truly had open markets to all.
