In the 21st century, do we need a monarch?

  • Do we need a monarch? Not really

Would our lives be any better if we abolished the monarchy? Not really

Does it cost a lot to maintain insofar as to how much each and every one of us contributes toward it individually? Not really

So what's the 'real' problem that get's people so worked up on the subject?

I can understand why some people think that way, however IMHO the late Queen was a direct descendant of Alfred the Great, we have had good Kings and Queens and not so good, but its all part of a thousand years of you history, once its gone its gone for good.

The reigning Monarch receives money from Parliament as they have since the Monarchy was restored and Charles 11 was put back on the throne to pay his bills and expenses, the reason the Monarchy was restored was because Parliament feared another Civil War the people were not happy.

Today the Monarch receives a yearly grant from Parliament to pay for the upkeep or Winsor Castle and Buck House, maintenance, staff and the expenses the Monarch incurs when carrying out their civic duties as well as , wining and dining Presidents and Leaders of other nations etc.

Every penny is accounted for it does not go into the Kings back pocket or any of the Royals , that money comes from the Crown Estates profits about 15% of the £300 plus per year they usually generate , the King and Royal family have their own money,

    IMO a bargain :)

In essence, in the modern world we should have a leader we choose to be in that role, not one that was born into the role.

And it's not just about the monarch, whoever that may be or even the royal family, but the army of leachers that go along with them, that we all have to pay for too. Or is that leeches, I don't know, same sort of thing. :)

I'm fine with that. :)

And I'll come back on the money points another day, when I'm more awake.

  • I agree many of them have failed miserably over the years done more harm than good they do have a lot of power, our Monarch has none at all they are sovereign in name only , it is our Parliament that has all the power over all of us.

What they want to do and impose on us laws taxation etc is simply rubber stamped by the Monarch, should he or she refuse to do it could mean a constitutional crisis which could mean the Monarchy being disbanded by the Government of the day which may cause civil unrest

  • H

I understand the sentiments but any comparison to monarchs of a bygone age are wrong.

They have had their problems, Harry and Andrew, Charles didn't cover himself in glory with our nations golden child (Dianna) but time is a great healer so its said.

Cost wise there is in real terms not one, they provide a surplus.

Please Sir, I want some more. MORE you greedy little socialist.

  • That’s right. Why would we scrap an institution that is well regarded throughout the world, provides valuable soft power to the UK and makes money for the country?

Charles is making sure that a lot of "noise" is being made around all the savings he is making, but he still has people to dress him... a grown man.

  • If I was in his position so would I, but I certainly would not change places with him his life is not his own always having to be somewhere and on time ^^

  • From the Royal Watch news thread:

    You want an elected President?

As I said in post 2 of this thread some years ago, I do not want to be a subject.

As long as the Queen was alive, then I was ok with the situation, but things have changed and I reckon it's coming soon to the point where we need to decide whether we want this particular family still ruling over us or not.

We are highly likely to have a Labour government in the near future so it will be the usual question about the royal family permeating from the socialists once again. It happens every time Labour get into power.

To be honest, Horizon, are they really 'ruling' over us? I don't feel their influence on me at all, do you?

They are good for tourism and they are a useful soft world power. Before considering abolition, we need to tnink about how palatable (and cost effective) an alternative system would be.

  • I think the tourism thing is a myth .
France has more tourists than us and they don’t have a monarchy .Tourists come to see the trappings of monarchy such as the palaces and changing of the guard .
They don’t come expecting to have tea with King Charles or even see him or any of the other hangers on .I have no personal animosity towards the royals they are irrelevant to my life and to most people expect the barmy lot who camp out to see them but then there is nowt so queer as folk .

How much money does the royal family bring in tourism?
Each year, millions of tourists travel to the UK to visit its many historical royal landmarks
