Why Beating IS Won't Change Much

  • Sam Kiley of Sky News has a recent report that is illuminating in its honest pessimism about the Islamic conflicts in the Middle East. And because they can't seem to be resolved, their desperate savagery has made its way to the west in the form of meaningless "terror".

    There are a lot of issues Kiley mentions and the most important are whether foreign intervention is always a good idea and whether one can make a silk purse out of the sows''s ear that is the modern radical Islamic collective.

  • One of the terrorists favorite excuses of late is that they doing the terror attacks because the UK or whatever country is interfering in what's going on in the middle-east or wherever, but if that wasn't the case they would find another excuse without doubt.

    We've hardly intervened at all for a long time, and even then with widespread international and regional support.

    It's not surprising they lie to justify their murder, what shocks me more is when Westerners like Corbyn blame us as well!

  • I think it will end, give it 10 to 15 years. We're seeing a change in Islam driven by the younger generation. They aren't rejecting it but don't want it to restrict them as much as it has been recently. Islamic violence is quietly putting many more of them off.

    Of course all it needs is someone like the US or the EU to fan the dying embers but surely they aren't so stupid to do that any more? Strangely Russia can get away with wholesale slaughter of Arab civilians without a peep from anyone.

  • This is one of the main stories today, rather relevant for here considering LW's OP:

    Saudi Arabia is the chief foreign promoter of Islamist extremism in the UK, a new report has claimed.

    The Henry Jackson Society said there was a "clear and growing link" between Islamist organisations in receipt of overseas funds, hate preachers and Jihadist groups promoting violence.

    Report on Saudi promotion of extremism

    ====

    Of course this is hardly earth shattering news. Saudi Arabia was created when the House of Saud and a rival clan, the Wahhabi extremists did a deal with each other.

    But what may end Islamic extremism is this, which is one of the other main stories of today:

    Carmaker Volvo has said all new models will have an electric motor from 2019.

    The Chinese-owned firm, best known for its emphasis on driver safety, has become the first traditional carmaker to signal the end of the internal combustion engine.

    Volvo to go all electric

    ====

    We need oil and we'll need it for at least the next 30 years. That, I reckon, is how long Islamic terrorism will last. Once the world goes all electric and ditches oil, they'll be no money funding for Islamic terror because the Arab countries will go bust. It can't come soon enough, in my opinion.

    My optimism about the Arabs going bust in the future, is tempered by the fact that we might do something in the Middle East to fan the embers, as Hoxton puts it.

  • @ Hox: I agree that the Muslims are getting tired of extremism in their theocracies. This has been the case for a while. Turkey gave secularism a try but is unfortunately trying to creep back to the past.

    The Arab Spring was a brave event. The fact that it flopped doesn't take anything away from those who want change. I also agree that this won't mean they dump Islam. The Christians didn't dump their religion either, but they did manage to secularise their politics, which is a start. The west still hasn't manged to get rid of some of the most insidiously perilous aspects of Christianity as a theocracy and a belief system because the west has merely watered this down into a kind of "liberal humanism". That is only halfway there, and it is causing a lot of strife in its implementation of the creed of political correctness and its need to find a new Satan, which it has discovered in anyone who isn't a lefty.

    Humanity is simply taking far too long to get real about itself and the world. The few who make great strides possible in science and technology are basically wiped out by the enormous mess that ensues environmentally and intellectually from the abuse of what is discovered.

    But, back to the Muslims, Saudi was where Islam began and it appears to be the engine that fuels Islam's most extremist aspects and factions. Rome was where Christianity began and the Holy Roman Empire did equal amounts of damage, plus the two sister cults of Christianity and Islam managed to become enemies and rivals. Apart from all the splitting into sects that has occurred in both camps.

    I agree with Horizon that oil is the key to killing off the need to negotiate with a problematic force. The Swedes (it would be the Scandinavians who are possibly one of humanity's most cool headed ethncities) who have put the skids on fossil fuel driven cars. Oil has polluted the earth and created false economies in places where this would never have occurred. The results have produced fallout that will poison us all for many years to come.

    We unfortunately live in seriously perilous times, but it's important to give hope to young people who will inherit these problems and so, if they are not to be consumed by the extreme pessimism that characterises many of them today, we should at least open some windows in the stuffy rooms of previous systems and help to create the opportunities these young people will have to build something from the ashes when we are all pushing up daisies.

    That is what existence is all about. Things come into being, they evolve, they become challenged, some die and others adapt. Making that adaptation possible and supporting it because it's a good idea is what politicians, socialists and all sane people should really be doing. Instead of grooming their egos and encouraging the kind of alliances that will be short-lived and end in collapse.

    Just my view. I'm sure there are a million angries who will say I am talking rot. :)
