Express Newspapers set to be taken over by Trinity Mirror

  • The owner of the Daily Mirror has said it is in talks to buy the owner of the Daily Express and Daily Star.

Trinity Mirror hopes to buy all of the publishing assets of Northern & Shell, which also owns celebrity magazine OK!.

As well as the Mirror titles, Trinity Mirror also publishes the Daily Record, the Sunday People and more than two hundred regional newspapers.

    Big media story, this.

The reading of newspapers, at least on paper, has been on the decline for some time, so it's no surprise that consolidation were to happen.

At least one good thing about this deal, is that Richard Desmond won't be involved in UK mainstream media. He can go back to running his porn magazines and leave tv and newspapers alone.

Should we be concerned if all the UK's national and regional newspapers end up being owned by three or four companies, or less, if the competition authorities allow it?

    BBC article

Ah, two wonderful newspapers. I don't read the Express but often look at their weather forecasts for the coming season. Usually for the winter we are promised 20 foot snowdrifts and for the summer it's always going to be hot enough to fry eggs on the pavement and water shortages.

The other day, the Daily Star promised us a plague of rats as they leave the sewers, which have apparently filled up because we've had so much rain, and come into our homes to avoid being drowned.

Happy memories of the Sunday Sport and stories about lorries found on the moon. :)

  • The owner of the Daily Mirror has agreed to buy the company behind titles including the Daily Express, the Daily Star and magazines such as OK!

Trinity Mirror is to pay £126.7m for the publishing assets of Northern & Shell, which is chaired by Richard Desmond.

Well, it took them some time as talks started last September, but the deal is going ahead now.

One load of rubbish buying another...

It's interesting reading the BBC comments to that article (click the orange link to read it) that many people are just asking why newspapers can't just report the news without all the political spin attached to it.

Would you be interested in reading a non-biased newspaper?

I have no problem with opinion pieces, but I would prefer if the news were totally separate and not biased to one political view or another.

  • The problem is that a lot of media sources tend to dress opinion up as fact, also rather than just report the news they tend to try to tell people how they should think and react to everything.

  • The government is considering investigating Trinity Mirror's deal to buy the Express and Star newspapers.

Culture Secretary Matt Hancock said he was "minded" to intervene on public interest grounds, including the need to ensure a "plurality of views".

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has already opened its own probe.

Had assumed this was a done deal. If newspapers weren't declining in popularity, then I'd agree with a competition probe, but many people get their news from multiple sources now and the papers are not as powerful as they once were, so this seems unnecessary.

Maybe Murdoch is having a whinge about it as he has friends in the government so it's being done to appease him.

  • The planned tie-up of the Daily Mirror's owner and the Express newspaper titles is to face a public interest probe by the media watchdog following government intervention.

Trinity Mirror is paying £126.7m for Northern & Shell, whose titles include the Daily Express and Daily Star.

But Culture Secretary Matt Hancock has now asked Ofcom to consider issues such as diversity of views in newspapers.

In a pre-internet era, pre social media era, I would've agreed with this move, but with newspapers losing share to social media and other news sources, a probe seems silly in this day and age.

  • As I said Murdoch has friends in the government, not to mention that the Mirror is a left leaning publication so the government wouldn't want them getting too big for their boots.
