  • Richard Desmond, the owner of the Daily and Sunday Express newspapers, plans to bid for the right to run the National Lottery when it comes up for renewal.

The porn supremo doesn't seem to be taking it easy in his retirement. Do these media moguls ever retire?

At the moment, he's trying to sell his Express newspaper group to Trinity Mirror the owner of the Daily Mirror which once done, would leave him with nothing left. He already sold Channel 5 to Viacom in 2014.

As the article states, he already runs a lottery, but i's loosing money, the National Lottery is all powerful and no doubt that's why he wants it.

Camelot, the group that runs the lottery, is now owned by a Canadian pension fund and had their licence recently extended to be able to keep running the lottery until 2023. Will they sell it to Desmond? It's making them a lot of money.

  • I remember Richard Branson making a bid at one time with the promise he would give a larger proportion of the proceeds to charity.

I am sure I read somewhere a while ago about a case of a fraudulent ticket claim which was only found out about after the winner had been paid out and I believe that was the real reason the BBC scrapped the Saturday evening lottery shows.

  • Now you mention it, the lottery shows have gone. I thought a lot of them were ok. I'll research about this, might come up with a new thread idea! Thanks for the indo, Ron.

  • He'd re-brand it as the Virgin lottery. The mind boggles.8|

History is much like an Endless Waltz. The three beats of war, peace and revolution continue on forever.

  • I don't think Branson would touch it again, his mind is on spaceships now.

  • I would rather it be taken over by some not for profit organisation where more of the money is given to worthy causes, the price of tickets reduced also the top prize reduced capped at £1 million and the minimum age raised to 18 in line with other forms of gambling also the number of scratch cards reduced too with the age limit on them raised too.
