I thought that all the nutters were in the USA demanding freedom from restrictions and denying that the virus is dangerous

Makes you wonder about the Corbyn parents to produce these two sons

I thought you loved Corbyn, and all his nutty socialist ways. When you lock down people in a so called free country, you are asking for trouble.

  • I know you're not a spokesman for the government but you are a passionate defender of them. So can you tell me why it was considered better to close the schools in the first place and now decide to re-open them. What has changed?

You see I am concerned about the welfare of the teachers, and the children spreading the virus in the community. Look what happened to front line medics who had to work without adequate protection. Plus the other three countries of the Union are not opening their schools on scientific advice

I do not defend the government on everything they do!

The original plan was to let the virus rattle through the population and create herd immunity, but then the scientists became aware that although this would deal with the problem in double quick time, the NHS would be overwhelmed, and it was that reason, and that alone, that persuaded the government to change tack.

In my opinion, the government should have protected the vulnerable and everybody else should have carried on as normal. Closing the schools was ridiculous - had they stayed open, the virus would have passed through the population a lot quicker and with the vulnerable locked down, the number of deaths would have been minimised.

I understand the concern people have raised about putting teachers at risk, but frankly, they will come into contact with it sooner or later anyway. Most will not even be aware that they've had it.

We have achieved a slowdown, not near-elimination of the virus.

Good job the governments in N Zealand, S Korea, and Taiwan took a different view

  • Nope. There is no vaccine yet. Just one more super-carrier and it all starts up again.

That's why we need to get herd immunity.

We tried that here, that's why we have the biggest death toll. You may accept that as a consequence but I doubt if the relatives do

  • Hopefully Starmer

Every time I hear this name It makes me think of the Nazis and WW2. Is Starmer a German name. :D

I have taken a break from the news and COVID reports etc for last week. Can't be arsed following it now as everything changes from one minute to the next. Bored of it all and the bullshit, lies and manipulation. All I can see is more and more restrictions on people and extra expense. Fuck it lets get back to normal send the kids to school so we can send the parents back to work. Let the Schools become the next care home scenario as kids become the big carriers and spread it back to their parents who can then go out in public and back to work and spread it to others. I think all the crappy Blue Peter face masks will also help spread it with a false sense of security and more people touching their face etc. Wearing a mask seems to have made folk think that social distancing is no longer required in supermarkets and places. What's the worst than can happen. Even if 50% of population is wiped out it will improve life for everyone left behind. More space, more vacant homes, more jobs, less pollution, less food required and on it goes. Population numbers is still the country and the worlds biggest problem after money, greed and capitalism, and not just for us humans but all other life on Earth.

I don't remember that, I wonder where I was. Our strategy was isolation, but in a small country with far to many people that's very difficult. From the offset we were always going to be hit hard, that's why I believe we should have taken it on the chin and not had a lock down. More deaths short term, stronger economy and less deaths long term. I would like to think that future governments would address our massive population now, but I doubt they will. They will just keep building more houses and cramming people in.

It was obvious that some restrictions needed easing. Coming down from a lock down was always going to be difficult, and I suspect every country that is doing the same are having problems. Of course, it would have been easier if we didn't have one in the first place, but we are where we are. I believe that the government should have put a restriction on how far you could travel to exercise, but other than that I'm not sure what they could have done better

  • Hey the UK Gov have just added loss of sense of taste and smell to the official symptoms list for Coronavirus. That's outstanding, is there anyone in the UK who didn't already know that? Best to keep following the advice of those top notch scientists

But that happens to me whenever I get a heavy cold. It obviously has to be in combination with other symptoms. Without a proper test result it's not definative.

    Unbelievable

After all these weeks they have "suddenly" discovered some new symptoms

What next, green spots on one's big toe ?

  • Of course those in care homes are in "God's waiting room" as you put it, but to use your tsunami reference, the government did know we were about to be hit by a massive tidal wave, but rather than putting measures into place to protect the elderly and vulnerable, they just let the wave hit.

To me, this shows a deliberate negligent policy against the frail and that is unforgivable.

The only people who will suffer is the care home owners, so BIG DEAL. The elderly people in the care homes went there to die anyway, and COVID has merely accelerated the process. Their relatives will be getting a bigger inheritance, so they will be over the moon. As well as that the country has far to many old people, and desperately needs to see the back of a few. They cost the NHS a fortune, they still get a pension, and most of them are suffering because of some sort of ailment. Believe me, COVID hitting care homes is God send.
