Brexit's Going Really Well, Isn't It..?

  • I'm sure he has an excellent plan, Jenny, but without the support of the electorate, it will get nowhere.

Firstly, to rejoin, Brexit will have to have proved a failure. Secondly, you have to factor in whether countries like France would want us back anyway, after Aukus and other developments and perceived sleights on the way.

This initiative will fall at the first hurdle, so put your enthusiasm into this folly if you like, but I wouldn't part with any money if I were you.

We have escaped from the claustrophobia of the EU, and there can't be that many suffering from Stockholm syndrome. The young people who are indoctrinated at school and university will grow up eventually when they have worked in the real world and start thinking for themselves.

  • Somebody said further up this thread that there was plenty of meat across the English channel. That may be so but we in the UK draw the line at eating horses and stuffing the necks of Geese. ................. "Shergar steaks" might be OK for the Frogs, but we prefer proper meat from farm animals raised for the table.

Except for our Vegetarians who eat plant food and cause the Ozone layer to thin by their Farting. Just like cattle.

    The Voice of Reason

  • Farting is not so much an issue but the chemicals used in fertilizers and pest control are. Man made chemicals are doing an immense amount damage to the planet and the oceans and just because you can't see a carrot cry does not mean it is not suffering. So it's all a bit hypercritical really.

It's funny because I never ate any meat except for chicken and odd bacon butty for 30 years but due to health reasons I have started eating meat again, especially offal. I do like a bit of Lambs Liver and Bacon and I have now started on Pork sausages. I have yet to touch red meat but I do get cravings for it which is weird. I blame all the cooking programmes on TV.

If we get desperate we can always put humans on the menu. Apparently we taste a bit like Pork. If we ban meet there will be a huge increase in cannibalism and maybe a bigger black market of bush meat.

  • Attaboy, Boris!

    [EXTRACT]

Boris Johnson is gearing up for a second explosive confrontation with Parliament and the courts over Brexit as he demands a new deal with the EU which would free Northern Ireland from the oversight of European judges.

Downing Street is preparing for a major clash with the House of Lords and Supreme Court as soon as next month, with senior officials drawing up plans to unilaterally suspend swathes of the Northern Ireland Protocol if Brussels refuses to make "significant changes" to the current deal.

The Telegraph understands that Lord Frost, the Cabinet Office minister, will make it clear to his EU counterpart that removing European Court of Justice (ECJ) oversight of the Protocol is a "red line" for Britain.

In a speech this week, he will warn that "no one should be in any doubt about the seriousness of the situation", adding: "The commission have been too quick to dismiss governance as a side issue. The reality is the opposite."

Lord Frost will unveil "a new legal text" reflecting the UK's proposals. In a bid to reinforce Britain's sovereign status outside the EU, he is expected to insist that the proposed new Protocol should form part of the recent UK-EU trade agreement, unlike the current version which sits within the withdrawal deal signed as the UK quit the bloc.

The disclosures came as a senior minister claimed the EU's rigid approach over Northern Ireland was being heavily influenced by an "anti-Brexit" and "anti-British" French regime.

  • Boris trying to close the barn door after the horse has bolted. A lot if not all multinationals supplying NI have switched their supply chains from UK to NI to EU to NI to avoid the paperwork that is deemed simple by many here.

The company i work for supply about 2m per yr to NI and used to ship from UK. But as there is paperwork required the shipments were taking up to 2 weeks to get to NI due to time delays...customers complained and now we ship everything from the continent and it gets there guranteed delivery in 2 days....without the cost of the paperwork.

Any changes to that now will just disrupt business...yet again and its unlikely business will change their minds quite so quickly as boris and "lord" frost

  • THe EU are up to their usual Nasty Tricks again. Demanding reams and reams of paperwork just to punish the UK for daring to leave.. It's just nasty unnecessary red tape.

The solution is perfectly straight forward. --- Get rid of the artificial border down the Irish sea and put it where it should be -- Between Northern Ireland and Southern Ireland. No problems with trade or shipping goods between all parts of the UK. Southern Ireland is part of the EU and could carry on trading as normal.. ;)

    The Voice of Reason

  • trying to put a trading border between the republic of ireland and northern ireland would violate the GFA, it would be counter productive and would cause long lasting economic damage to NI in particular.

If we rip up the trade deal it would be economic suicide, mass unemployment, exodus of business and disrupted supply chains (again)...the supply chains are still not running properly and the checks for import to Uk are still not up and running havin had to be delayed twice now.

We werent prepared for last january, were not prepared now, we probably wouldnt be prepared for a no deal situation at our ports / airports for about 4-5 years

  • Attaboy, Boris!

I bet you have cuddly toy Boris on you pillow at nights. Boris on one side and Patel on the other LOL I honestly don't understand how anyone can be so nieve and passionate about any politician. They are never on the peoples side and always have an ulterior motive. You may as well be in bed with the Taliban. At least they have some sheets to keep you warm LOL

  • No, Norra, all the politicians have their faults and Boris has plenty. But it's good when they move in the right direction. If the EU will not co-operate, it's best to move away from dealing with them as much as possible.

We have already put forward the means by which trade can be monitored without a physical border and in a way that the populations of NI and the Irish Republic can still move around freely, but the EU have rejected it.

If the EU don't want to accept the UK's proposals concerning an invisible border, then maybe they should listen to us. Otherwise we will leave, and if they want to put up a border they can do so. It will be them breaching the Good Friday Agreement, not us.

As has been said many times before, not having a trade deal with the EU does not mean we don't trade with them. There are many other countries in the world that we trade with where there is no trade deal in place.

The EU is making things so difficult for us, such measures in the end become attractive. Project Fear does not wash with the public. It's just short term disruption for long term gain.

Well said OB  It's straighforward and sensible. If the EU want to put up a land border between Northern and Southern Ireland , thats up to them. The EU are stupid and twisted enough to attempt it.. :D

  • France humiliated as EU nations refuse to join its Brexit fishing war against UK
EMMANUEL Macron was humiliated today as EU countries refused to join his fishing war against Britain. The French president has been left weakened and isolated…

Looks like Macron's grandstanding ahead of the elections has bitten him in the arse. :D

History is much like an Endless Waltz. The three beats of war, peace and revolution continue on forever.

  • Macron is out on his own now that he has lost his mentor Angela Merkel. He doesnt have the intelligence or the ability to do anything on his own initiative.

Hope he gets kicked out of office by the French people. He is ruining France.

I expect he will survive, these progressive types always manage to cling on. Look at Sturgeon, Trudeau etc they are human Winnets, almost impossible to remove.

  • Happily, we are making good progress on the NI Protocol situation. That includes getting rid of the nonsense of having to label each product separately rather than for the whole consignment. That is more like what we actually signed up for.

Still a way to go, including the matter of ECJ yurisdiction, but we are getting there.

    https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2021/10/12/brussels-offer-new-brexit-deal-northern-ireland/

    [EXTRACT]

BRUSSELS will offer a new Brexit deal on Northern Ireland today, but is set to reject demands to strip European judges of their role in the province.

The European Commission will launch its proposals to resolve the dispute over the Northern Ireland Protocol, once the plans are approved in a College of Commissioners meeting.

Under the proposals from Brussels, up to 50 per cent of customs checks on goods would be lifted, and the figure is “even higher” for controls on meat and plants entering NI from the rest of the UK. EU officials are expected to say that they can cut the checks on British goods exported to NI, if in return they are given real-time access to UK trade databases to police products that cross into the Republic of Ireland.

An EU diplomat said: “The number of checks will go down massively. This is the best way to cut checks, short of a Swiss-style alignment agreement.”

The offer has been likened to the “maximum facilitation” plan originally proposed by Brexiteers but rejected by Brussels. It comes after Lord Frost said in Lisbon yesterday: “We will obviously consider [the EU proposals] seriously, fully, and positively. But – I repeat – if we are going to get to a solution we must, collectively, deliver significant change.”
