A step too far for road users.

  • They are going to force people out of their cars that can't afford it and push them to use public transport systems where available. Electric is not a viable option and it's not environmentally friendly. Everyone has just been brainwashed into thinking it. Where's the electric come from and all the materials for batteries! Saying that we do have to many cars on the roads but that down to population numbers. Take all the rules (highway code) of the roads away and we will soon solve the problem.

It’ll be hydrogen in the end, Norra. EVs are for the birds.

The ICE is wrong to endorse the views of these climate change fanatics. They have missed two relevant points.

The first is that people want to travel by car. It is the quickest way to get from A to B in the vast majority of cases and it is cheaper than going by public transport. Until a viable alternative is put in place, this will remain so. Building fewer roads and car parks will not change that.

The second is that petrol and diesel cars are scheduled to be phased out, so that by 2050, practically all vehicles will be using clean energy. So pollution should not be an issue in planning roads for the future.

Are they not joining the dots?

I don't think they are , the population is rising all the time , we are the third most populated island in the world we need to be able to travel just to get to work, hospital, go shopping visit family and friends etc, Public Transports especially the train system is unreliable and expensive.

  • He will get caught as they have his face. The problem is that this type of action may trigger more people to do this type of thing and as more numbers act it becomes to much workload for the police. Just look at the groups in Holland that go around shooting speed cameras and setting fire to them etc. But like any protest or activism it can create publicity to the point where government are forced to start listening to the people or risk losing votes. The cameras and tech will develop, get smaller and more discrete as time goes by.

It already is AI camera caught hundreds of offences in one hour recently in a trial

  • It may be linked to some AI software engineering but it's not a facial recognition camera but designed to read license plates. Facial recognition camera's are a twin lens like binoculars to capture a stereoscopic image that can then be used to build a 3D impression. Besides it's not that camera that has his face. It's some other very low quality camera in that picture. Probably a local council cctv camera zoomed in on the action.

I was aware of the difference , I simple did not notice I failed to say Traffic Camera thanks for pointing it out to me

  • Well the noxious fumes are being dealt with as newer vehicles are cleaner and as we transfer to clean energy. This must be a gradual process to ensure poorer people don't lose out by being priced out of being in possession of a car. As each year goes by, the air in London must be getting cleaner already, surely?

Yes we covered this in the By Elections thread where after robust challenge by Armitage I was persuaded to that 'it's too fast' view. (see post 32 here RE: By-elections 2023 )

But old NOx producing diesels run for ages and ages so I stick with my view that ' that Khan had to do something but have to agree that what he's done has been both clumsy and questionable.'

But this mass taking the law into supposed vigilante hands with camera destruction is just wrong. Accept or worse applaud that and it effectively legitimises those gits that block roads etc.

I hope they find the perpetrator(s) and jail them.

  • Hybrid cars are worse than diesels.

Plug-in hybrids emit many times the claimed CO2, test suggests
Even with a full charge, PHEVs may emit far more CO2 than manufacturers claim, according to testing from a European environmental group.
    www.greencarreports.com
Does hybrid car production waste offset hybrid benefits?
The hybrid car may be the savior of the automobile industry, but its production processes have come under fire of late. The car may be green, but what about…
    science.howstuffworks.com

Cars are not the problem IMO but the many commercial vehicles are the worst offenders. Buses, Coaches, Skip Lorries etc etc. Saying that most buses have now switched over to electric or hybrid. Emissions problems have also been made worse with speed restrictions and traffic calming measures which all cause traffic jams. This is something that has been fabricated to then blame the vehicles and market the new electric way of doing things. Never mind all the lithium mining and the generating of electric to power them.

  • Very broadbrush that Nora and as phrased, wrong with that 'Hybrid cars are worse than diesels'

Those articles have click bait false headlines not backed by the detail in the article bodies.

Diesels already produce less CO2 than petrol cars because of their higher mpg. But they produce far more NOx and particulates.

Plug in Hybrids (PHEV) CO2 output is most often limited by lazy drivers not charging them and in some cases by their low pure electric range (never buy one with less than 30 miles electric range).

But they are way better than diesels. Our large SUV PHEV over a year is achieving over 90mpg with charging and when it's out of volts we get ~43mpg because PHEVs get excellent energy recovery (far better than pure hybrids)

No same size diesel is going to match that.

  • Err yes they are

There isn’t even a mature methodology for assessing the impact on NOx. The report made is very clear that the data was not considered reliable. It is also impossible to separate the health impacts of NOx from the PM2.5 particulate data. So it’s impossible to state with any credibility what the impact of NOx actually is. The air quality in London is incredibly good now as a result of technology advances which is the way things should be. There is no health based excuse for ULEZ. It’s a money spinner pure and simple. Nobody is dying from this, the report uses contrived numbers, it is misinformation.
