Extinction Rebellion trying to blocking oil sites

  • Just Stop Oil protests: Terminal operations suspended and arrests made
Nineteen people are arrested as climate change campaign groups target critical fuel sites across England.

Yes, the scum bags are back (did they ever go away?) and not a million miles from me causing chaos.

Just when energy prices are high, we need as much energy as possible, but some people only have oil heaters to heat their homes and may need the very supplies that these scumbags are blocking.

Can we not just shoot them and be done with it?

  • They just want to cause disruption. Any issue will do.

We need to toughen up our laws without penalising people carrying out peaceful, non-disruptive demonstrations.

People should always be permitted to go about their lawful business.

  • They are well meaning but do themselves no favours at all, by all means protest peacefully it is a right we all have but blocking roads , gluing themselves to underground trains, planes, bringing traffic to a standstill stopping others from getting to work schools hospitals is not on it does not win hearts and minds the total opposite.

When they are arrested by the Police they often claim the Government is trying to stop our right to peaceful protest, no they are not it is them that is putting that right at risk

  • This on the Collective Voice facebook page in the last half hour. Its not just the share itself, but the comments that are already emerging. Notice this. a nation that doesnt protest will never change anything.

a nation that doesnt allow protest will never have justice.

The tories are passing laws that will give the police the right to shut down any protest, any time, for any reason - and they have carte blanche to use extreme force without fear of being held to account. That is fascism. And it is happening in Britain. Now.

what you don't seem to understand is that the more you oppress people the harder they buck against it. Now, you might not believe this but I am not a fan of ER either. I have to put petrol in my car to make it go just the same as you do. But they are not being listened to and denied a fair hearing of course they are going to get attention by other means.

If they were allowed a fair platform I am sure a lot of the extreme protests would fizzle out. but they are not. The tory controlled press vilifies them out of hand, and the BBC is cowed into submission by threat of having its funding cut. This too is fascism.

It may surprise you to know that groups like Rejoin do not support extreme measures being taken on the streets, but when a toxic political situation such as that which exists in britain today is predominant then they are left with little choice.

Just telling the truth, that's all. I know you don't like it, but there it is.

  • but when a toxic political situation such as that which exists in britain today is predominant then they are left with little choice.

I hate to say it but you are left with a choice you become what they will class as a terrorist which may even lead to terror.....basically civil unrest as the people can no longer take any more and fight back. Some may even go more extreme and decide to join real terrorists as they have more fire power. This country could very easily end up in a Northern Ireland situation but it wont be a divide over religion but a divide over rich and poor or some other divide caused through immigration or people versus ER or other groups or simply a complete breakdown of society with many splinter groups all fighting each other. Fighting each for survival eventually. It could even be something silly that sets it off. Remember how the Clapham riots started to spread across the country into various other cities. People power and things can spread much faster these day with the Internet as we saw with BLM spreading across the Atlantic.

What's going to happen when we have more floods this year. Will some of those that get flooded out then decide to join ER so they grow in power. What would you choose a peaceful protest blocking a road or more extreme direct measures like cars sabotaged. I remember the days of the IRA and it's not pretty. Maybe that's what the gov want so they can then enforce even more extreme measures of their own so it's a tit for tat situation that is always escalating. That can only end in war. Remember there is always more people than enforcers and just like in Vietnam those with more firepower can be beaten. David versus Goliath so they are not a threat physically.

If it wasn't for sitting down and talking (RIP Mo) we would still be at war in Northern Ireland today. Maybe the gov should take a look at themselves or have lessons not been learned. I don't think the current gov really cares and think they can just keep banging out new statutes. The more they do that the more people will rebel because it not only effects the likes of ER but everyone else too. People don't wont to live in a fascist society run by Stasis that has cameras on every corner and other people told to grass others up or install apps that catch people out for mr meaner's that they then get fined for etc. It may even help ER grow in numbers especially as more poverty prevails. The gov should be smart enough to know that bullying does not work but Boris is a bully, look how he smacked into that little kid on the rugby ground.

  • If you are getting all your information through social media, I’m afraid you will have a very warped view of the world.

Contrary to what some people like to put about, this is not a ban on protests. Maybe you should research better what you post on here and try to give a more balanced opinion.

All in all, this seems a set of proportionate measures to deal with unacceptable disruption. As for the charge that the proposed legislation takes away the right to protest, the government is making it very clear that this is not the case.

    [EXTRACT FROM LINK]

4.1 Will these measures ban protests?

No, these measures will not grant the police, local authorities, or any other body powers to ban protests.

However, the Public Order Act 1986 already contains exceptional powers for a local authority, on an application by the Chief Constable and with the consent of the Home Secretary, to prohibit a public procession or trespassory assembly.

In London, these powers are given to the Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police and the Commissioner of the City of London Police, with the consent of the Home Secretary.

These powers are unchanged by this Bill.

  • Good post OB..

I'm all for people's rights. Yes people have the right to protest peacefully, but not to stop anybody going to work or going about their lawful business. Nor have protesters the right to damage and vandalise people's property including public property.

The rights of the general public should always come before the rights of vandals, social misfits and Marxist nutters.

    The Voice of Reason

  • That’s right, Mike. There are ways of getting the message across, but disrupting the population from carrying out their business is not the way to go about it. That just antagonises people and the message is lost.

  • The problem here is the messaging. The average person is not going to read government blurb on their website any more than someone who will reads googles terms and conditions. It's like reading legal blurb and very cleverly laid out and worded to put spin on things and very rarely what is on paper will ever match the reality. Don't forget people that go to protests report among themselves the reality of what happened on scene not what's written on paper or the picture put out on government news channels, you know the BBC you so dearly love LOL Then there's the fact the gov more often than not say one thing but do another. The country is run my liars and manipulating thief's so how can anyone trust what they say on the news or on their website. The trust was lost many many years ago and is not even the fault of the current government. It's the system....the whole f..ing house is guilty.

This is nothing new it's always happened but what is new, apart from more media sources and faster spread, is the noose around the neck restricting freedom of movement and it's getting tighter and tighter all the time with each new statute so people are beginning to choke. The right to protest where one can visually have an impact and be allowed to get their message out by protesting is key to this. I'm sure the gov will say 'yes you have the right to a peaceful protest but you can only do this in that underground car park over there out of sight out of mind' or you have to go to speakers corner in Hyde Park where very limited people will see or hear from you.

The media messaging does not help either as they seriously shit stir and are the real antagonisers here in these scenarios that set people off and then it gets onto social media which then helps feed the mainstream media and you know the rest. There's a loop there. A seed planted that grows and then that one grows and drops a new seed so the situation grows and so on which then feeds more into the system that we vote for so who to blame here. On the the other hand protesters may exploit and manipulate the media like a child manipulating it's parent to get what they want as much as the media manipulate their own seed planted. It's a vicious circle. How do we break that circle is what we should be asking. Look at who runs the media and prevent that seed being planted to begin with. Follow the money.

  • The thing to remember is that the right to protest and demonstrate remains enshrined in British law. What the new legislation does is to clarify police powers in order to prevent innocent lives from being severely disrupted.

That is the kind of thing the government should be doing.

  • And the post you made earlier OB, shows that.

These "protests" are a form of terrorism, albeit low level. But whether its preventing people from going about their daily lives by blocking motorways, or blocking fuel supplies, their actions have a real impact and need to be stopped.

  • Lets get real here no they are not terrorists yet, far from it. That's just another spin being put out to vindicate them more. If they where terrorists we would have body parts splattered all over the place or they would be running around on the rampage with a knife stabbing everyone and everything in sight. The worrying thing is the gov may actually turn them into real terrorists if pushed far enough because at the end of the day what's left after protesting. Come on Horizon you lived through the days of the IRA and now we have Muslim terrorists. Would you really want them to be pushed into becoming like the IRA fighting a cause as well as having to deal with the Muslim terrorists. And what happens if they decide to join forces because the end game is more or less the same I think and they have the same enemy only coming from a different angle. As things stand all they are doing is causing disruption. Admittedly they are not doing themselves any favours because they don't get people on side but that could very well change in the future especially as energy costs rise and homes are still not insulated properly etc.

  • The thing to remember is that the right to protest and demonstrate remains enshrined in British law. What the new legislation does is to clarify police powers in order to prevent innocent lives from being severely disrupted.

That is the kind of thing the government should be doing.

It is enshrined in our Law and yes there is no move by the Government to take away that right we all have, if you want to hold a protest march or an Easter Parade , all you have to do is contact your local Police and they will help you arrange it when and where .

All they have done is add some legislation to existing legislation which has been in place for a long time, in order that Police can deal with changing tactics being used by such as Extinction Rebellion who arrange unauthorised pop up protests in several different location to shut down bridges roads public transport etc.

  • Good post OB..

This is much the same as flying pickets as used in the miners strike to prevent scabs from getting in to work. The flying pickets were always met by Police using force if necessary to clear the way. Blockading fuel supplies is highly disruptive and anti-democratic. The protesters know that their ideas will not do well at the ballot box so they use acts of desperation combined with a brainwashed repetition of the talking points they wish to convey. The Police don't attack these blockades with sufficient aggression as far as I am concerned. By all means protest but do it somewhere that doesn't cause disruption. Their actions are causing real damage to real people, fuel shortages always create price hikes not just in fuel but also goods and services. This is a form of domestic terrorism as people are held to ransom by unreasonable and undemocratic demands from extremists. There is little to no sympathy with or for these activists especially at this time.

Celebrate it, Anticipate it, Yesterday's faded, Nothing can change it, Life's what you make it

  • Today is the day where these protesters can officially be nicked and charged as these made up laws by the gov get signed off by the queen (though she's not attending) in parliament. Everything we have been fed so far is bullshit hence on many occasions they where taken to the police station then instantly released.
