  • My Condolences too TR.

I agree about the Inheretance Tax threshold too.

They could raise it each year by a certain percentage to gradually increase the amount before tax.

If the chancellor has some spare cash I'd rather he spent it on the NHS, care of the elderly and Education.

  • TR

Sorry mate, one never knows if ones rants touch a nerve in others.

I feel your loss brother, my heart is with you and yours.

Do unto others as they would do unto you, then f**k off before the Police get there. :saint:

Ooh, yes…imagine how many equality and diversity courses they could put on and how much more they could give away to Stonewall.

You wouldn’t notice any difference in level of service, Stew, it would be wasted by NHS England. As always. They’d probably have to create a whole new department just to figure out how to spend the money, and it’s unlikely to end up on the front line.

Then that is the health secretarys job to make sure they spend it where it is needed.

  • When you guys say inheritance tax is about right, I gotta strongly disagree.

I say that because the level of inheritance can vary so drastically depending upon where you live.

I'll quantify that, remember the bedroom tax, well older people in London who bought their homes 40yrs ago are now sitting on a fortune. Far more than their north east, north west or Scottish counterparts. That's down to house value but as things stand it's all lumped together in inheritance tax.

Now, that old person could be sitting in a house valued at £1m,but as they bought that house 40-50yrs ago, or was previously a parents home and they've spent their lives there, it's monetary value isn't an issue for them. However,he was a rail worker, she was a nurse and they both draw their OAP, but cannot afford to heat the house in winter it's too big.

Savings monetarily less than the current threshold their son inherits upon their demise. He would love to live in that house but it's in London, he works in Sheffield, but he will be liable for a sizeable amount of capital gains, because I'm assuming even if he'd like to live there it's value forms part of the estate which due to HMRC tax he would be forced to sell in order to pay the tax. That can't be right.

I'm no au faix with these rules.

But we set aside to look after our kids futures, we should be encouraging this not penalising us for being good at it.

  • What does it matter where you live or own a property?

If he lives in Sheffield what he does get would buy more of a property than down south and if he works in Sheffield why would he move to London?

Profit is profit no matter where you are and is taxed accordingly.

The old couple could have sold up and moved up north nearer the son and would have had a nest egg to aid them.

We seem to have this fascination with leaving money for others when we depart this mortal coil.

  • I disagree with you on one point there is no such thing as " Bedroom Tax " that is what the Opposition and Labour called it, but in fact it only related to Social Housing which is in very short supply, some lone tenants that due to age or children moving out were living in two or three bedroomed local authority flats or houses on their own

Those that did were encouraged to downsize move to a smaller flat or house owned by the local authority to free up their larger flat or house for a family, those that refused and were in receipt of some benefits may have them reduced by £10 per unused bedroom.

When it comes to Social Housing as I understand it if you live with your parents who the housing was allocated to sitting tenants should both parents pass away their child or children still living there have to leave , the tenancy is not passed on to them in this day and age.

House prices here in London and similar in other cities is astronomical due to " Supply and Demand" not enough housing , the average rent in the private sector is £2,500 per month, far too many people chasing far too little accommodation due to the size of the population which is getting larger every year.

Our House is up for sale I could not believe what the Estate Agent valued it at. 14 times what we paid for it 28 years ago , I have a couple coming to view it at 5pm, over 2,000 hits on the website in 12 weeks over 25 viewings so far.

As for Inheritance Tax it needs looking at , IMHO the more that anyone can leave their kids the better , less likely to be a burden on the State be able to buy their own home and do the same for their kids.

  • What you say comes back to me saying that old couple could have sold up and downsized and had a bit in the bank to make their lives better.

  • Listening to Cleverly this morning, he talks a good job, but so have all the other home secretaries. The problem of undesirables illegally entering our country has not been addressed properly. It keeps being kicked into the long grass.

If foreign politicians are stopping the UK dealing with illegal immigrants, then our laws should be changed to over rule those Politicians .. Sunak is too soft and doesn't listen to the general public who don't want those people here. We need a strong leader who will put the interests of the UK FIRST.

As I understand it Sunak is going to change some of our Legislation ASAP but the Unelected Lords may block it

Those lords were put there by the parties.

  • That’s what I keep saying - we’ve painted ourselves into a corner. Abolishment of the Lords and their replacement with something rather less archaic should now find its way into the Conservative manifesto.

There was enough parties in Downing street to last a dozen parlaiments. You gotta be careful using words like parties, truebrit gets all uppety.🤣🤣

  • Tbh Heero we have found that with regards to certain items the supermarket shelves can be sparse. This has been like this post covid, but they haven't even tried to introduce a substitute item in some cases.

  • I've got some frozen florets but I like fresh where I can control the size. Something else that's disappeared is tinned flageolet beans.

I have a lot of trouble finding blackberries these days. I like to add them to my nuts and seeds cereal.
