  • Has anyone watched this series?

It was great to see the guys & girls growing as people as their training progressed

I was particularly impressed with 50 Kg girl passing the fitness test carrying a 40 kg pack

How does it compare with your experience CL ?

  • TrueBrit, CL might not see this thread, unless you send him a notification.

And I haven't seen the series, but I will look it up. Thanks.

  • Well watches ep1, everything has changed and nothing has changed.

They got better uniform, accommodation is better, quilts OMG pussies lol.

My recruits had bed block, sheets and a counterpane that had go tighter than a virgin.

Language is no different but I had no girls, they were trained separately and girls weren't on front line units. I was old school, we didn't have the army recruit training regiments, it was still done by individual corps, the guards trained at Pirbright and the infantry trained separately as in that series.

I used to start with about 90 recruits, they arrived on the Sunday, heads shaved sunday night, uniform issued Monday along with oodles of paperwork. We didn't have the clothing these guys have, weapons the same, and we would pass out with about 30 after 10 weeks. Some were homesick bless em, some injured got back squared, some kicked, some just left as not for them.

These recruits are built up over the weeks, what I saw in ep1 clearly covered several weeks. Girls with desire to be front line infantry should be respected, but they cannot be allowed to be seen to have separate lower standards. Battlefield conditions requires each person to be able to help each other, look out for each other but not because they aren't up to standard.

I will watch the series and will be happy to compare, but remember I left the army early nineties to join the police, its all changed.

  • Thanks for the notification TR, I had seen the programme was there but hadn't got round to watching so you geed me up ty.

There has been a few of them over the years, don't know if you remember "BAD LADS ARMY".

The Sergeant major in that, a chap called Alistair Reay ex RAOC (ordnance Corps) now Adjutant General Corps I served with, a lovely man died with covid 😢.

He went on to reach the pinnacle for a non commission officer as RSM Regimental Sergeant Major at Sandhurst, so it shows it can be done.

  • watched the lot now, enjoyed it but I'm still a little khaki brained if I'm honest.

I loved the army, the friendship and camaraderie are second to none. Just written this morning to guys I served with in Germany in the early eighties. I've never done a reunion, maybe one day.
