  • Wonderful images of your garden, H. I am so envious of your lovely fluffy grass!

I've just planted a mint plant. She's doing well so far and I have some ginger roots delivered to us by one of Mr Wing's farmer relatives, so we will be planting them somewhere soon.

That will be unmowed, messy grass! :) It's too late in the year to do it now.

What's happening with your garden these days LW?

When we last spoke about it, you had got rid of the grass and had it paved over I think. Any other major changes?

  • My camera is playing up so I need to get it serviced. I will take some pics when I do.

Yes, we have paved and paved and now have a nice large paved area under a big tree which we intend to half shade with a lapa (grass roof on wooden poles, very popular here). We are busy planting new beds and grass areas and whatnot at the mo.

My little family of bonsai that were infants when I was last here have grown into promising looking trees. Will post a pic when camera is fixed. Mr Wing made me an "en" to put them on out of wooden poles and planks. Looks very Japanese. The trees are ranged on this on the patio. I have so far an orange, a Russian Olive, Black Monkey-Thorn, White Monkey Thorn, Chinese Hackberry, and a n avocado that looks like it might decide to depart for the avocado afterlife. Have to see what it decides to do. And a Carob in training pot.

Only the Black Monkey Thorn was a bonsai when I got it as a gift from Mr Wing. The rest I grew from seed or from tiny germinated trees I discovered in the garden. I have just acquired a set of traditional bonsai tools.

I have also always wanted to grow orchids and am now seriously considering a few.

  • No rain here and very dry.

What a fantastic range of trees you posted about yesterday, LW. :)

  • I looked up the street this morning after last night's storm and saw a beautiful acacia in her summer glory fallen down over a strelizia palm. As acacia caffras are of the mimosa group I suspect she split apart and fell in the storm. Damn. Such a beauty. Will leave a gap in the sky there now :(

  • We've Just finished planting out the ginger roots. I thought by this time they would have dried up in their packet, but when I inspected them this morning I found they were all sprouting! When I cut the shooting bits for planting the roots were a bright, moist orange inside. So, time to plant 'em. We put them along a western wall and I just hope nothing scoffs the roots before they can sprout above ground.

I remember you lost a tree and it split, was that of the same type?

  • Can't wait for my camera to be fixed so took one of my Bonsai "en". Ignore mess beyond railings as we are restructuring and it's a wilderness out there at the mo.

  • I'd take that "wilderness" aka very nice garden anytime. :)
